Igor Stravinsky – Pablo Picasso

This is Picasso’s sketch of Igor Stravinsky.  As a drawing this is beautifully done, my favorite part being the hands.  I have always liked line drawings where the line is dark and consistent.  Igor Stravinsky was a composer in the early 1900s.  His pieces were very controversial for example, “The Rite of Spring” (1913) was so appalling and different that people walked out of the performance.  If you listen to “The Rite of Spring” while looking at this drawing, it fits perfectly together.  The song flows, yet at the same time can surprise you, as does this drawing.  It is clear that it is of a man, yet it is not conventional.  This is how I see Igor Stravinsky’s pieces, the genre is clear, yet the execution of the piece is not conventional.
